GZA employs a full range of remedial technologies to help solve our clients’ environmental challenges. One technology that can be particularly cost-effective is bioremediation. For many of our projects we utilize remedial additives to promote the growth of naturally occurring, native soil bacteria that can destroy and/or immobilize hazardous constituents, reducing toxicity and potential risks.
We use our state-of-the-art treatability laboratory to identify the appropriate mix of remedial additives on a site-specific basis. These additives can range from commonly available fertilizer mixtures of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous to GZA’s proprietary additives that drive the enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) of chlorinated solvents or the transformation of toxic and mobile heavy metal species to innocuous and immobile species. Once an additive is selected, our hydrogeologists develop and implement an injection program to effectively deliver the additives to the desired treatment zone. For cases where site constraints make in situ injections infeasible, we can construct on-site biocells or bioreactors to treat the impacted media ex situ.
GZA has successfully employed bioremediation to treat a broad range of environmental contaminants – from petroleum hydrocarbons to chlorinated solvents to heavy metals – under a wide range of site conditions. GZA was an early practitioner in the field-scale ERD of chlorinated solvents and has been involved with some 50 ERD projects throughout the United States and Japan including the treatment of DNAPL sites. We also performed the first reported groundwater remediation project (enhanced bioremediation of hexavalent chromium) on the Indian subcontinent in 2006.
GZA founded the Bioremediation Discussion Group at www.bioremediationgroup.org. This technical forum is an industry leader in facilitating discussion, research, and environmental biotechnology transfer in the bioremediation and natural attenuation fields.
