Human Toxicology

Toxicology is the study of how biological, chemical, physical, and radiological agents affect living organisms and the ecosystem.  Professionals trained in human toxicology can identify and assess exposures, identify mechanisms by which toxicants affect homeostasis or induce disease, identify interventions to prevent adverse effects, and estimate acceptable levels of exposure to protect the public health.

Today, toxic tort liability cases, particularly related to asbestos, heavy metal, and organic solvent exposure, have caused an explosion of law suites that have resulted in billions of dollars in settlements, ruined company reputations, and company closures.  Conversely, employees and the public exposed indiscriminately and egregiously to these agents have suffered greatly.  Government regulatory activity, non-government organizations (NGO’s), special interest groups, and global regulatory requirements make it mandatory that businesses, institutions, and organizations have the capability to assess their potential liability exposure in the arena of toxic tort.

GZA’s health professionals can conduct toxicological assessments, exposure monitoring, dose reconstruction, literature assessments of toxicity affects, and specific case determinations, for a variety of chemical, biological, and physical agents.  We help the client through the rigorous and complex process of determining liability and the support of legal and regulatory proceedings.  Many of our clients rely on us to interpret data rather than just report it, to identify problems and recommend remedial actions, to discuss conditions with regulatory personnel, provide litigation support, and when appropriate, to negotiate on their behalf.

GZA’s toxicology, industrial hygiene and risk assessment professionals have the experience and expertise necessary to assist clients with in the following specialized areas:
